31 Days of Halloween 10/31: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

Kind of a sequel to Night of the Living Dead, the film tells the story about a group of people trying to fend off a zombie outbreak over the 4^th of July weekend. Groundbreaking in the fact that the film introduced talking and fast moving zombies. There are several sequels but the first is the best by far.

The Return of the Living Dead grade: A+

31 Days of Halloween 10/30: The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

College students fend off a variety of creatures while lab technicians manipulate everything from an underground lair. This movie is a real treat and a ton of fun.

The Cabin in the Woods grade: A

31 Days of Halloween 10/29: Chopping Mall (1986)

For a film entitled Chopping Mall, there’s very little “chopping” going on as teenagers spending the night in said mall are stalked by malfunctioning killer security robots (which is why the original title was Killbots). Ridiculous premise? Of course! However, the film is just a whole bunch of fun and I love every minute of it. Bonus is that the film features tons of genre stars like Kelli Maroney, Barbara Crampton, Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov, Dick Miller and Gerrit Graham to name a few.

Chopping Mall grade: B+

31 Days of Halloween 10/28: The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

Father-and-son coroners experience supernatural phenomena while examining the body of an unidentified woman. This film is almost 10 years old and still does not get anywhere near the recognition it deserves as it’s fantastic from beginning to end.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe grade: A+

31 Days of Halloween 10/27: Black Christmas (1974)

Predating Halloween by 4 years, Black Christmas revolves around a sorority terrorized by an unknown threatening caller/killer during the Christmas season. I usually save this until the Christmas season but it’s a great Halloween choice as well!

Black Christmas grade: A

31 Days of Halloween 10/26: The Descent (2005)

Six women on a spelunking expedition must survive against humanoid creatures who live in the caves. There’s a US ending and a UK ending, the latter of which (I think) is better.

The Descent grade: US version (B-), UK version (A)

Nothing to do with the film, but here’s a cool song where the title may apply.

31 Days of Halloween 10/25: The Wraith (1986)/The Car (1977)/Christine (1983)

Possessed auto night! The Wraith stars Charlie Sheen as a resurrected teen who uses his indestructible car to wreak vengeance on a local gang. The Car sees a possessed automobile going on a murderous rampage in a small southwestern town (and has two Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in their younger days!). Christine is based on the Stephen King novel about a haunted Plymouth Fury and an obsessed teen.

After 48 years, I can still hear that horn from The Car and it still freaks me out. That said, rewatching it a few years ago made me realize that I fondly remembered the very few cool parts of the film and most of it is ultimately really silly. Would I watch any of these if they were on right now? Absolutely!

The Wraith grade: B-

The Car grade: C+

Christine grade: A
