Back in 2004, I sat inside a darkened theater and watched M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. The movie centered around an isolated community fearful of local beasts lurking in the surrounding woods. Because of said creatures, no members (save for a few elders) of the self contained village ever venture forth beyond the trees and have no knowledge of the larger, outside world. I remember thinking to myself about a half hour into the film (**SPOIL…ah, you know what, if you haven’t seen it, just…just don’t) “I really hope this isn’t set in modern times and these people purposely alienate themselves from the rest of society.”
Sigh. I was right…and disappointed.
Early into You’re Next, I posited a possible outcome of the tale to my wife, mentioning that, without spoiling anything, some things were not as they seemed, certain people weren’t to be trusted, and pretty much called the ending (save for one minor detail).
I was right, yet far from disappointed.
You’re Next is one of the most taut thrillers in years, with completely believable characters trapped in an extraordinary circumstance. After a man and woman are brutally murdered immediately following sex (which concludes with a most ingenious way to introduce the title of the film), Aubrey and Paul (genre vet Barbara Crampton and Rob Moran, respectively), an obviously wealthy couple, welcome their children and their significant others to their retirement home for a celebration–a home that happens to be right next door to the murder scene. Crispian (A.J. Bowen) and his girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) are the first to arrive but are soon followed by: son Drake (Joe Swanberg) and his wife; daughter Aimee (wonderful on HBO’s “Family Tree“) and her boyfriend Tariq (Ti West, director of The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers) and younger son Felix and his girlfriend Zee.
Then the uninvited guests arrive. Three masked assailants (in the guise of a lamb, a tiger and a fox) launch an attack on the house, picking the guests off one by one through garroting, crossbow bolts and machetes (just to name a few). Erin proves the most resilient and resourceful, using her survivalist skills to great effect in dispatching the intruders. Eventually, she becomes the one who uncovers the reason for the massacre and really goes the extra mile to ensure she doesn’t end up as another fatality.
You’re Next borrows from other great films like The Strangers, Straw Dogs and a bevy of 80’s slasher films but never feels as if it’s a retread of those movies. Writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard keep the action moving briskly while creating characters who aren’t merely cardboard cutouts. At a running time just north of an hour and a half, that’s difficult to do, but they and the fantastic cast (particularly Sharni Vinson who will appear in an upcoming remake of one of my favorites, Patrick) inject fresh energy into what could easily have been a by-the-numbers outing.
I’ve enjoyed the hell out of the body of work from all involved (too numerous to mention here) and You’re Next was another proud addition to everyone’s resume. Any film fan (genre or not) will love the cat and mouse tale of sheer brutality, from the opening sequence right down to the final frame!
You’re Next is currently available on Amazon instant and the Blu-Ray will be released on January 14th.
